What are invisible (lingual) braces?
Perfect Smiles Orthodontics specialise in invisible (lingual) braces (Incognito) for adults. These are fixed behind the teeth so that they do not show at all.
As invisible braces are placed on the inside of the teeth, they are ideal for those who would prefer their treatment to go unnoticed.
Invisible braces may only be needed for short periods of time for simple problems through complex cases can take up to 2 years. The majority of the invisible
braces are on the adult patients but children can request this treatment from 14 years of age. Fees are between two and three times that of conventional treatment.
Whilst invisible braces do not show, our patients certainly know they are there. The tongue may be irritated and sore initially. Speech can be affected, causing a lisp or whistling sound in the first few weeks.
Chewing food will also be difficult as the teeth are held apart by the braces for the first few months.
90% if patients wearing invisible braces have very few complaints after the first 10 days.
What is SureSmile?
For decades orthodontics have straightened teeth by placing a series of archwires in a patients mouth. Each wire required mintues to be placed by the doctor to move the teeth to their intended position. Over time teeth are straightened and the braces are removed.
Suresmile is a new technology using robotics to make precise bends in a patients treatment wire. When such a wire is placed, the teeth are moved with very gentle forces programmed into a new high-tech memory wire. The net result is the correction of the bite with fewer wire changes and in significantly less time than with conventional wires bent by the doctor at the chair. Patients benefit by having fewer wire changes, less sore teeth, and getting their braces off in fewer months.
To utilise SureSmile technology, our main office will scan the teeth within a few months of placing braces. The information derived from the scan is sent over the internet to a facility in Texas. Dr Chin will then move the teeth into their ideal position in the virtual world. Computer software then redirects robotic arms (as illustrated) to place all bends needed in the custom memory wire to yield an exceptional finished bite.
Carriere Distaliser Appliance
Creating a Corrected Bite Without Headgear
The Carriere Distaliser is an orthodontic device developed to correct a bite without removing permanent teeth when teeth have erupted incorrectly. With an effect similar to headgear, but without the use of a bulky appliance, the Carriere Distaliser pushes upper teeth back to create a corrected bite prior to the addition of braces. How does the Carriere Distaliser work?
- First, your orthodontist will create an anchor point, most commonly with a lower Essex Appliance, a passive lingual arch, full mandibular fixed appliance, or mini screws. A Carriere Distaliser arm is then attached to the upper teeth on both sides of your mouth.
- An elastic band is attached from the upper bar to the lower back molars and should be worn at all times except when eating.
- With good elastic wear, you bite can be corrected in a matter of months, depending on the severity of your case.
- When the Carriere Distaliser arms are removed, we will place upper braces to finish correcting your bite and aligning your teeth to the perfectly straight, ideal smile you've always wanted.
The Carriere Motion Class III Appliance
The Motion Class III Appliance is a minimally invasive appliance that Perfect Smiles Orthodontics may use to treat Class III malocclusions. Ideally, this is done to eliminate extractions, painful orthognathic surgery, or traditionally uncomfortable and obtrusive facemasks. The Motion Class III Appliance features a custom fit and gentle repositioning of the molar with no complicated springs, push rods, bands, or crowns. It provides predictable results and creates a harmonious, balanced profile, all while preserving your natural features.
The Carriere Motion Class III Appliance is used at the beginning of treatment, before Perfect Smiles Orthodontics places your braces or aligners. It helps reduce overall treatment time by several months, allowing you to spend less time in braces.
What is an Invisible Aligner?
Invisible aligners such as Invisalign involve a series of custom-made clear removable aligners which fit over your teeth. There are no metal wires or brackets. Each aligner is worn for about two weeks, moving your teeth gradually - millimetre by millimetre - until they are straighten. You may get perfect alignment of your teeth with just invisible aligners. However, some patients may require a short period with fixed appliances as well to achieve the best result.
Invisible Invisalign braces only work while you are wearing the aligners and these should be worn all of the time, day and night, except for eating, contact sports and brushing.
Please note that Invisalign Braces is not suitable for all orthodontic problems.
What are aesthetic braces?
Many patients do not want metal braces fixed to their teeth. "Train-tracks" are very obvious, even from a distance, and there is an increasing demand for less conspicuous braces.
Aesthetic braces are clear or tooth-coloured brackets which are usually made from porcelain. A metal wire is used to straighten the teeth but this is only really obvious on closer inspection. These clear braces are usually fitted on the upper front teeth and upper side teeth only. Perfect Smiles Othodontics uses Damon Clear In-Ovation C and Clarity brackets.
If porcelain brackets are fitted to the lower teeth they could damage the edges of the upper incisors. Metal attachments are therefore normally recommended in the lower arch.
