It is natural to be intrigued about the comfort of braces. After your initial brace fitting, you’ll likely experience mild pain or discomfort for around 3 to 5 days. Braces work by applying continual pressure to the teeth, and this can take a while to become accustomed to. Most patients describe the sensation as a dull ache. If necessary, you can take a mild over-the-counter painkiller such as paracetamol (pandaol) or ibuprofen (nurofen).
You may also experience irritation and soreness if your braces happen to rub the inside of your cheeks. Over time, your gum will thicken and become more robust but, until then, the orthodontist will provide orthodontic wax. This can be applied to the brace brackets that are bothering you to prevent further irritation.
Minor complications such as enamel staining, mild gum irritation, temporary bite changes, or food trapping are common. Serious problems are rare when you follow care instructions.

When you have braces it is more important than ever to maintain good oral hygiene. Therefore, we recommend that you brush your teeth using fluoride toothpaste four times a day for at least two minutes. This will help to ensure that plaque cannot build up and harden around your braces.
If you notice that your fixed metal, lingual, or ceramic braces have broken or become loose, you must ring us straight away. The receptionist will arrange for you to visit the practice to have your braces repaired as soon as possible. Please do not wait until your next appointment, as this may unnecessarily hinder and lengthen your treatment.
We understand that accidents can happen, so your first three brace repairs will be free of charge. After this, you will be charged a repair fee for each subsequent breakage. Should you repeatedly break your braces due to lack of diligence, the orthodontist may decide to terminate your treatment.
Retainers are custom fitted and can be fixed or removable. Consistent use is crucial. Most patients need to wear them full time for 1 to 3 years, then nightly until the orthodontist says otherwise.
