Hillarys – Perth, Western Australia

Hillarys is a suburb of the Australian capital city Perth, Western Australia, and is about 21 km northwest of downtown Perth. Bounded on the west by the Indian Ocean, Hillarys is located in the local government area (LGA) of City of Joondalup, with an area of approximately 6.3 square kilometres. As of the 2018 census, Hillarys had a population of 10,680 people.

Until the 1950’s, the only inhabitants of Hillarys were the family of Bertram John Hillary, a fisherman who settled there during the Great Depression, and for whom Hillarys is named. The Australian Army used the beach during World War II, and noted it as “Hillary’s Beach”in their records.

The suburb of Hillarys emerged during the development of the coastal area of Whitford by the local government authority City of Wanneroo. This development included building Westfield Whitford City, a retail shopping centre that opened in 1978, and which currently boasts nearly 300 tenants. At 76.000+ square metres, Westfield Whitford City is currently Perth’s largest shopping centre.

The population of Hillarys grew slowly until Hillarys Boat Harbour was built in preparation for 1987’s America’s Cup, in which Australia would defend the trophy it won in 1983. This, coupled with the development of Westfield Whitford City, led to accelerated growth in the area. Now a thriving residential community, Hillarys offers a charming beachfront escape; both for residents of Perth eager to enjoy a break from the hustle and bustle of city life, and for travelers from all over Australia and the world.

In addition to Westfield Whitford City and Hillarys Boat Harbour, some of Hillarys many attractions include:

The Aquarium of Western Australia (AQWA) – located within Hillarys Boat Harbour, AQWA is owned and operated by Coral World International. It is located 20 minutes north of Perth city and is the 10th largest aquarium in the world. It is also home to Australia’s largest underwater acrylic tunnel.

Sorrento Quay and Sorrento Quay Boardwalk – also located within Hillarys Boat Harbour, Sorrento Quay is a waterfront retail centre with over 60 cafes, restaurants, specialty shops, and other unique retail attractions.

Marmion Marine Park – a 10,500 hectare, protected area established in 1987, Marmion Marine Park is the first marine park in Australia. Home to limestone reefs and several hundred species of fish, the park is also frequented by sea lions, dolphins, whales, and other diverse marine animals. Visitors enjoy swimming, boating, snorkeling, and scuba diving.
