Emergency Care

PSO Xmas Closure 2021
(Please note that this applies only to existing PSO patients)
Orthodontic emergencies are rare but they do happen.  We are available when it does.  Please call the office when you experience severe pain or any major difficulties with your orthodontic appliance that can not be resolved by yourself.
You will be surprised that there are temporary solutions that you can perform until the time of your scheduled repair appointment. By having knowledge on the different components of your orthodontic applicance, you then can easily identify what is out of place or broken.  Once you alleviate your discomfort, call us the next working day to schedule a repair.

Loose/Broken Bracket(s)

 Broken Brackets
If your bracket is still attached, please leave it in place and use wax to alleviate the discomfort.  If the bracket is broken, please leave the broken piece (if can be found) in a small envelope or zip bag a and bring it into the office for repair.

Poking Wire

If the archwire has slipped out, use tweezers to re-insert back into the molar bracket.  Orthodontic wax can be used to cover the archwires that are sticking out to alleviate the poking pain.  If orthodontic wax can not be used to ease the discomfort, use nail clippers to cut the offending archwire.

Broken or Lost Retainer

If your retainer is broken or lost, please contact the office to schedule an appointment for a replacement.

General Soreness

With your first time experience with braces, you will generally feel soreness in your mouth and your teeth will be sensitive to the biting pressures for 3 to 5 days.  Stick with a soft diet until your teeth doesnt hurt from the chewing.

Sore spots and irritation can be relieved by rinsing warm salt water in your mouth.  Dissolve 1 teaspoon of salt in a glass of water and rinse thoroughly.

Your cheeks, tongue and lips will be irritated when you first have braces on during the first 2 weeks as they become accustomed to having the orthodontic appliance inside your mouth.  Use orthodontic wax in areas where it's causing rubbing/pain against your mouth.
